The constitutional crisis engulfing Kiribati has dramatically escalated, with the government ordering the deportation of high court justice David Lambourne, an Australian citizen, on Thursday morning.

Police and immigration officials arrived at Lambourne’s residence in Tarawa, the capital, in the early hours of the morning with a deportation order and a same-day airline ticket to Fiji.
