Government-imposed caps on the wholesale price of coal and gas will only help consumers if fossil fuel suppliers play ball

In an attempt to arrest escalating power prices, Australia’s federal, state and territory governments have agreed to impose caps on the wholesale price of coal and gas.

Announcing the decision after national cabinet met on Friday, the prime minister, Anthony Albanese, said parliament would be recalled to pass the necessary legislation. He indicated there was enough crossbench support for this to be a formality.
